Welcome!

Thank you for coming to our site! It is under a lot of construction but we hope to have a final product by September 25. The first issue’s articles can be found below. Feel free to comment.

For now please also visit our forum at www.studentsforreform.org/community where you can creat a profile and begin posting. Thanks again!

Below is my letter from the first issue:

Students for Reform (SRF) began almost a year ago as an idea tossed around among friends before classes and over coffee. It was our consensus that Louisiana State University has a need for a new type of political organization- one that does not claim a particular political party, but instead takes a step back to look at the whole picture. We found that most students who were not politically involved felt they didn’t know enough to understand the issues. It became our goal to provide a source for students who feel overwhelmed by the front pages of the newspapers. SFR was thought of as a way to explain current events and why they are important to everyone. We found it frustrating that involvement in politics on campus required one to choose a side. The purpose of this organization as stated in our constitution:

“Students for Reform” is established for the expressed purpose of combating political apathy as well as promoting political education and involvement.

SFR is also a place of involvement. A place for students who feel their voice is never heard. We want every person who has something to say to speak up. We hope to offer this publication, as well as our online forums, as places of debate and discussion. On one level, our publication and website will produce objective articles aimed at understanding an issue and the history that led to this point. On another level, we hope to fill pages with editorials by people of all opinions, to give them the ability to express themselves. This is a place to question why someone feels a certain way and give them the opportunity to explain their views and how they feel in relation to you. We want to encourage every student who is passionate about an issue to have a voice. Through these interactions we feel a person can form an opinion. By reading and hearing all sides of a topic, one can become stronger in where he stands on the matter. SFR will not encourage you to stand on a particular side, only to stand.

As the country appears to become more polarized, it is increasingly important to preserve dialogue. In our publications and on the website, objective pieces are collaborative efforts to bring you the facts and history of an issue. The editorial pieces are not objective, and are meant as a platform for writers to express their opinions and argue their side. If you read something that upsets you or that you feel is a weak argument, write us. After every article you will find the e-mail for responses. We want to hear from you. We will publish op-ed features. Also, in the coming issues you can look forward to teacher interviews and candidate profiles.

On campus this fall we hope to host speakers, feature a debate between the College Republicans, College Democrats and College Libertarians, and much more. Come see us in the Student Organization Fair. Become a member and help shape the plans of this organization. Speak up, listen, and enjoy.
